Pure Oud by Kilian was not composed as a literal translation of oud oil in its purest form. The word “Pure” means polished, a subtleness and refinement of the main resinous note, combined with different elements and deprived in part of its medicinal vibe. The result is probably the best oud interpretation in western niche perfumery. Unlike most other ouds, the discordant note of medicinal plaster found in most oud fragrances is completely absent.

Opening: The First Stopover

A sweetish opening, ambery and rum-like, quickly gives way to a prickly, splintery and very rough smell, a kind of sandpaper for the nose. Saffron pierces through with metallic warmth, while copaiba balsam adds a soft balsamic resinous sweetness. The first whiff is a sort of very smoky aoud, frankincense, seasoned woods, rubber and dried berries smell, immediately dark, immediately commanding, immediately unlike anything else in western perfumery.

Heart: The Dark Monolith

Wet civet and dry tobacco form the first juxtaposition in the heart, then it becomes drier and smoky with guaiac wood. Saffron and musky violet suggest the nuance of leather. The oud here dominates in extraordinary fashion, building up on the skin in layers of translucent ink, leather upon rubber upon gasoline, until it finally pushes off the skin in a sulky swirl of woodsmoke. Far from being a dull woody accord, the interplay of facets is what makes Pure Oud dynamic and interesting, the sum round and mellow, the composition coming to life as the facets readily reveal themselves.

Base: The Golden Legacy

Amber, labdanum, guaiac wood and a hint of musk join the oud to form a base that is as dark and monolithic as a sphere hitting your nostrils with pungent leathery woody intensity.
