Inn-o-scents presents Dark Lord, an inspired tribute to By Kilian’s most mysterious and deeply masculine creation. Inspired by a quote from Oscar Wilde and the archetype of the mysterious gentleman of the night, Dark Lord is Kilian’s first vetiver fragrance, which took 12 years to develop. Created by master perfumer Alberto Morillas together with Kilian Hennessy, a striking mix of light and shadow, blending deep leather and strong vetiver with jasmine soaked in rum.
According to Kilian Hennessy himself, Dark Lord is the perfect everyday fragrance, elegant, rich and long-lasting. The essence of vetiver from Haiti is the fragrance’s base, present from the very opening and enduringly powerful throughout.
The Fragrance Journey:
Opening: The Darkness Arrives
The opening is woody, leathery and earthy, the primary notes of pepper, leather, cypriol and jasmine sambac hitting immediately with extraordinary presence. The nagarmotha takes centre stage immediately after the first spray with a super intense dark woodiness tinged with a solid dose of earthiness, peppery spices taking the edge off a little bit. Bergamot adds a barely perceptible luminous counterpoint, a sliver of light in an otherwise beautifully dark composition.
Heart: The Velvet Smoking Jacket
The heart fills with animalic leather and the warming influence of rum and davana, the jasmine sambac absolute adding a surprisingly sensual floral depth that gives Dark Lord its paradoxical character. What I know for sure is, if I am wearing it, I want to be sat having a whisky in a velvet smoking jacket. The animalic nature is pronounced, anyone who has smelled Gucci Guilty Absolute knows the horse-stable character being referred to here, but in Dark Lord it is far more refined and sophisticated, leather that is dry and realistic rather than synthetic.
Base: The Gentleman’s Legacy
After an hour or two it slowly starts to reveal woody notes, images of pencil shavings come to mind, absolutely beautiful. The vetiver takes control in the base, Haitian vetiver providing an earthy, smoky, slightly medicinal depth that is one of the most distinctive and addictive in all of niche perfumery. Atlas cedar and patchouli anchor the composition in warm woody permanence, the leather becoming drier and more distinguished as the hours pass. Above average longevity with strong projection.
